Summary

Rational Rehabilitation (RR) is a short third wave cognitive behavioural therapy that aims to improve staying-power and, as a result of that, to reduce psychological suffering. Cue- and counterconditioning are the core therapeutic instruments. It is especially effective in patients with chronic symptoms. This article describes the results of a pilot-study that applies RR to drug or alcohol addicted patients who successfully finished an abstination programme.

The results show that patients who finish therapy report more autonomy / self control and less psychological distress. Until follow-up there is no drop back of addictive behaviour. A controlled study is needed to determine whether these results can be attributed to RR.
